Handtmann Process Technology modernizes recooling system in the Light Metal Casting division

The recooling system in the Light Metal Casting division was comprehensively modernized. The project was implemented across divisions within the Handtmann Group of Companies and combines the technical expertise of Handtmann Process Technology with the operational requirements of the Light Metal Casting division. The aim was to increase operational safety, improve energy efficiency and bring the plant up to the latest technical standards.

 

The recooling system consists of a cold and a hot water tank, which are hydraulically connected to each other and are located in the basement. The cooling water is pumped from the cold water tank via a ring line to the casting machines and the compressors using consumer pumps. The heated cooling water is then returned to the hot water tank via a separate return line. By connecting the two tanks, the water is heated up successively as a result of the system.

 

As soon as the temperature in the cold water tank exceeds a defined limit value, the cooling circuit is automatically activated. In this case, pumps transport the warm cooling water from the hot water tank to the cooling towers on the roof. There it is cooled down and then returned to the cold water tank. This interaction ensures a constant operating temperature and reliable cooling performance during production.

 

Handtmann Process Technology implemented several comprehensive technical measures as part of the modernization. These included new control cabinets with modern control technology and the replacement of the three existing consumer pumps. The previous 50 kW pumps were replaced by more powerful 90 kW pumps, which are now controlled via frequency converters. In contrast to the previous pure on/off control, this solution enables operation at the optimum operating point. This reduces energy consumption and wear and increases system availability. The energy consumption adapts flexibly to the current production capacity utilization in the light metal casting division.

 

Another focus of the project was the joint development of new control programs and a clear system visualization on a control panel. This work was carried out in close coordination between Handtmann Process Technology, Handtmann Service and the Light Metal Casting division in order to ensure practical, safe and reliable plant operation. The modernization was supplemented by an extensive renewal of the electrical cabling.

 

The successful implementation of the project once again demonstrates the added value of cross-divisional cooperation within the Handtmann Group of Companies.
